Wintry Mix Expected Tue-Wed

TUESDAY AFTERNOON UPDATE:

Only minor adjustments to the placement of ice accumulations are necessary for the evening and overnight forecast. A Winter Weather ADVISORY is in effect for much of Western Kentucky, Southern Illinois, and parts of TN and MO. An Ice Storm WARNING is in effect for a few counties in Southeast Missouri. Both alerts are on the map to the right.

MONDAY EVENING UPDATE:
Another round of wintry weather is expected in the form of rain, snow, and freezing rain starting later Tuesday and continue into early Wednesday.
Much like the first wintry system we experienced this year, much of the precipitation will be in the form of rain, freezing rain and sleet.

Starting early Tuesday evening, rain and sleet will overspread the area pretty quickly and possibly even switch over to all rain for an hour or two, especially south of the Ohio River. During the overnight hours we are expecting temperatures to hover around the freezing mark. Where temperatures drop below freezing, freezing rain (glaze) will become more likely.

The map shows the areas most likely to see this glazing take place overnight. Ice accumulations will range from 0.10" to 0.30" in the blue/purple shaded area. Ice impacts are shown in the bottom graphic below.
Freezing rain and sleet will continue for much of the overnight until daybreak. There may end up being a period of snow if moisture sticks around long enough as temperatures drop from NW to SE.
Areas along and south of the TN border and into the southern Bootheel of MO may even stay mainly in the rain/warmer sector until sunrise before briefly changing over to sleet or snow.

Planting Zones Heading North

As our global climate changes, so does our planting zones, helping us determine which flowers/shrubs/trees are hardy in specific areas. The Local 6 area has always been split by 2-3 growing zones so placement becomes very important to those in the agricultural community. The image below represents the average over the past 30 years. Updates on Upcoming Winter Weather Events

Sunday Morning Update: A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for much of the WPSD Local 6 area with a handful of counties just reaching Winter Storm criteria. Here is the latest map. They are in effect until early Monday. Snowfall totals have not changed much from last nights posting and I really feel this will still just be a road impact for Monday morning. Portions of NW TN and MO Bootheel have been placed under a Winter Weather Advisory all for winters weather on Sunday as colder air begins to arrive. Longer Allergy Seasons

The National Phenology Network is showing the early arrival of leaves on trees in the Ohio Valley, the Midwest, and Western United States this year. This trend has become more of a norm over the past past 50 years. Climate Central published data this week showing the same trend since 1970 with notable attention to the West where states are seeing as many as 17 more frost-free days, extending the growing season. Here in the Local 6 area, the growth is not as notable but still averaging between 4-9 days additional to the growing season. Why does this matter? Aside from having an influence on which plants are suitable for planting zones, it has a much higher societal impact by extending the allergy season.
